Dr Collighan is a full-time Consultant in Pain Medicine, specialising in a wide range of pain conditions. He has delivered Pain management at East Kent Hospitals University Foundation NHS Trust for the last 11 years and has been Lead Consultant during that time.

He believes that all pain management strategies should be a combined medical, interventional and psychological approach to ensure optimum results and patient wellbeing.

Specialism

Dr Collighan has been trained in the more complex interventional procedures including spinal cord stimulation, intrathecal drug delivery devices and intradiscal therapies. He has recently developed a private multidisciplinary Spinal Cord Stimulation service for the County of Kent which can be delivered at any of the hospitals he consults out of.

He has 10 years experience in preparing and submitting medico-legal reports with regards to assessment of pain management and treatment requirements.

Neuromodulation

Dr Collighan has a particular expertise in neuromodulation, a medical procedure used to alter nervous system function for relief of pain. He has jointly established a neuromodulation service at East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust that provides both spinal cord stimulation and intrathecal pump placement. Following guidance from NICE in November 2022 Dr Collighan is now able to offer Multifidus muscle neuromodulation using Mainstay systems for patients with non-surgical low back pain with signs of axial instability.'

Medico-Legal Experience

Dr Collighan has been involved in the preparation and submission of medico-legal reports with regards to assessment of previous pain management and on-going requirements since 2009. He completes 20-30 medico-legal reports per year, majority claimant but he also has experience with defendant reports.

Medico-legal training includes Bond Solon Civil Procedure Rules for Expert Witnesses Certificate and regular attendance at Cambridge Annual Medico-Legal Conference. Dr Collighan has been an officer of the Medico-Legal Special Interest Group (SIG) of the British Pain Society.

Election to Honorary Secretary

Dr Collighan has recently been elected Honorary Secretary for the British Pain Society

In 2018 Dr Colleague was elected by his colleagues as a member of the Council of the British Pain Society. He acts as council liaison for the National Institute of Clinical Effectiveness (NICE) and also the Interventional Pain Management special Interest group.

Other Appointments

In 2013, Dr Collighan was appointed as the South East Coast Representative on the NHS England Clinical Reference Group (CRG) for Specialised Pain Services. In 2016 he was appointed South representative and in 2019 he was appointed as a National Representative.

Developing the field of Pain Medicine

Dr Collighan has been actively involved in the development of the field of pain medicine. This includes the following roles:

  • Co-Chair of an editorial group that developed guidelines for Medial Branch Blocks and Radiofrequency Denervation of lumbar facet joints in the UK. Now published jointly by the British Pain Society and the Royal College of Anaesthetists' Pain Faculty
  • Chair of a Pain Society working group developing a UK statement on the use of steroids in axial procedures.
  • Appointed Chair of the British Pain Society Interventional Pain Management (IPM) group in 2015
  • Joint author of articles in the Journal of Observational Pain Medicine
  • Awarded the Fellowship for the Faculty of Pain
